In 1996, Dr. Ralph Redding, Beverlee Redding, and the Rev. Caroline West gathered a small community group around a simple idea: uninsured neighbors deserve real medical care.
The clinic opened that August in the Phoenix House with two examination tables, seeing patients one night a week. Within a year it had outgrown the space, moved to 411 Broad Street, and was seeing 10 to 15 patients an evening.
In 2001, the board secured a grant to purchase the former ENT Physicians building at 1315 Tatum Drive, where the clinic still operates.
Thirty years later, volunteer physicians, dentists, nurses, and pharmacists still provide care to more than 375 adults every year who are uninsured.
