Feeling Good – Patient Success Story “Betty & Mike”

The MERCI Clinic patients want to tell their story– stories of how the clinic helps them get through the day. Without care from the clinic, they would be without much needed medical and dental care– and life-saving medicine. With no other options, they would be forced to seek care in the emergency room or– just go without. Many can only afford to buy either food for their family or insulin for their diabetes.

Meet Betty and her husband Mike. Mike once had good job with the hospital that included excellent health insurance benefits. He and Betty raised a family and had a happy life. Then, Mike began suffering with severe depression and related mental illness. He had to stop work and of course lost his health insurance policy. He also has been diagnosed with high blood pressure and Betty has diabetes. She is a nail tech with no insurance coverage either. Mike was suicidal until he began seeing doctors at MERCI. Eventually, providers at MERCI and Port Human Services were able to get disability benefits for him. MERCI literally saved his life. They also receive free meds at MERCI and she attends the diabetes clinic that teaches good eating, cooking and drinking habits. They have been patients for five years and receive their medications through the clinic. They have a cousin who is also a patient.
