Bite of the Nite

Let your ticket be your guide as you stroll the beautiful streets of Downtown New Bern, listening to the sounds of live music while stopping at a variety of restaurants and host businesses to taste a “bite.” At the end of the night, you will vote for your favorite “Bite of the Nite.” Tickets are $30 each. Online purchases reserve your ticket; actual tickets must be picked up at Sound Bank (1801 S. Glenburnie Road) between May 1 and May 15 (Monday – Friday 9-5).

MERCI Clinic Seeks New Executive Director – Accepting Applications Through 11/16/18

Life is taking Beth and her husband, Ramon, to Tampa, FL the end of this year and as a result MERCI is looking for a new Executive Director. Please send cover letter and resume with interest to by 11/16/18.

Job Opening: Executive Director

MERCI Clinic is currently accepting applications for the position of Executive Director to lead clinic operations in Eastern North Carolina. MERCI Clinic provides quality health care, dental care and pharmacy services to residents of Craven, Jones and Pamlico Counties with limited income. MERCI Clinic is a 501(c)3 organization.

The Executive Director represents the MERCI Clinic in the community. He/she interacts with stakeholders, sponsors, regulators, and supporting organizations with the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior. The position is responsible for fundraising events, budget management, human resources, program development, board development and strategic planning execution in cooperation with the Board of Directors.

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
Successful grant writing and grant management experience
Successful fundraising experience
Demonstrated leadership skills
Financial management experience: budgeting, cost control, reporting, forecasting
Experience working with Board of Directors and volunteers preferred
Non-profit experience preferred
Experience building successful partnerships with other community entities

Salary is commensurate with experience and education.

Anticipated starting hire date should be by mid-December 2018.

Welcome Beth Cooper, Executive Director

Beth CooperMERCI Clinic is pleased to welcome Beth Cooper as the new Executive Director.

Beth brings over 30 years of management experience in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors. Most recently, Beth served as Executive Director of Family Promise Metrowest, a nonprofit in Natick, MA providing shelter and transitional housing to families who are homeless.

A hearty New Englander, Beth and her husband, Ramon, moved south to North Carolina in July of 2014 -and boy was it hot! They soon fell in love with the mild winter climate, the beauty of Eastern Carolina’s diverse wildlife and the active sailing community and welcoming people of New Bern. Beth is an active member of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary New Bern Flotilla 20-04 and the Coastal Women’s Forum.

Beth is excited to be the newest member of the MERCI Clinic’s team and is eager lead the organization into its 21st year of providing free health care to the uninsured in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico Counties.

This week, Chris Buttitta, President of the United Steel Workers Local 1167 Union presented MERCI Clinic with a donation of $1200. The local union has been a strong supporter of MERCI Clinic and happy to continue their annual contribution. Money is collected at their end of year reception, held at The Flame, for their members. After presenting MERCI Clinic with the check, Mr. Buttitta was given a tour of the Clinic by Deb Bourne-Hammerle, Clinic Manager, and Beth Cooper, incoming Executive Director. Chris Buttitta may be familiar to some as he is also the bassist for Hot Buttered Grits! Thank you for your generosity!

MERCI hires new Executive Director

THANK YOU Priscilla Miller and WELCOME Beth Cooper!

We want to take a special opportunity to thank Priscilla Miller for her many years of service and dedication to the MERCI Clinic. On December 30, Priscilla will retire from her position as Executive Director and take some well-deserved time with family. She has been a huge asset to the success of the MERCI Clinic, weathering some difficult financial times. The Staff, Volunteers and patients will miss her tremendously, but are excited for her new ventures.

Replacing her will be Beth Cooper. Beth and her husband moved to New Bern with a keen interest in sailing. She was Executive Director of a prominent non-profit in Massachusetts and brings experience in volunteer and donor development, fundraising and event planning as well as grant writing. We are eager to kick off a new year for MERCI and with Priscilla’s help, know the transition is going to be very smooth.

Congratulations to A. Machle, who is the $20,000 raffle ticket winner! MERCI Clinic just completed a raffle on a chance to win $20,000. Five hundred tickets were available, so the chance to win was 1 in 500. At $100 each, MERCI Clinic was able to raise nearly $30,000 in proceeds! “This was such a fun opportunity and a win-win for everyone who participated,” said Tom Monte, MERCI Clinic Board President. The drawing was held on Wednesday afternoon at the office of Carr Riggs & Ingram on Trent Road, New Bern.

We called Ms. Machle to let her know how thankful we are for her support of our Clinic and how happy we are to share the news of her winnings. She has never won anything in her life and is so excited to hear the news. She was delightful to speak with and we look forward to meeting with her to make everything official. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
